Revealed in their September “Short-Term Energy Outlook”, the EIA announced that they expect consumption of natural gas to decline in the United States in 2021 and 2022 when compared to 2020 levels. The expectation is that every sector will be down – save for the industrial sector. The largest anticipated decline will be in the electric power sector. The expected total consumption of natural gas is 82.5 Bcf/d in 2021 (down 0.7 Bcf/d in 2020) before rebounding slightly in 2022, however not quite to the levels seen in 2020. Consumption largely reflects prices, and if the pricing isn’t economical, generators will find a lower-cost source to generate power.
